Social & Emotional Learning (SEL)
A SEL Approach
A Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) approach helps students process and integrate their social and emotional skills in school. SEL, also referred to as “soft skills”, are personal qualities that help students connect with others. Students develop socially and emotionally at the same time they are developing academically.
SEL consists of 5 key skills which are implemented daily at PCA:
- Self-awareness: recognize one’s own goals, emotions, values
- Self-management: regulation of one’s own emotions/behaviors
- Social awareness: compassion for others
- Relationship skills: establish and maintain healthy relationships
- Responsible decision-making: choosing positive choices
Benefits of SEL
- Greater academic success
- Fewer behavioral problems
- Less emotional distress
- Positive social behavior
- Better teacher-student relationships
At PCA, we spend time developing social/emotional skills instead of spending time on treating the issue. The more time spent on developing, the less time will be needed on treating. This is so important in today’s world with mental health issues on the rise. PCA looks at the whole child academically, socially, and emotionally.
